Custom Magento engineering for a packaging commerce PWA.

The project

Project context

The project supported the commerce channel of a major international paper-based packaging manufacturer. Business customers could configure and order made-to-measure boxes whose price depended on dimensions, corrugation type, material quality, quantity, and destination.

The architecture separated the frontend from commerce operations. Magento Commerce managed the catalogue, quotations, orders, and backend logic; a PWA delivered the customer-facing experience and communicated with Magento through GraphQL.

Our work focused on the custom engineering behind these processes. We developed Magento modules, calculation logic, administrative tooling, and operational integrations built around the client’s real supplier, material, order, and channel models.

The five workstreams were independent: made-to-order quotation, Power BI data delivery, shipping and returns orchestration, fiscal reporting, and eBay synchronisation. Together, they extended Magento as the platform’s operational core.

Custom supplier-selection and quotation engine

Engineering challenge

A made-to-order box did not have a static price. The system had to turn dimensions, corrugation type, quality, quantity, location, and postcode into an offer based on materials, price bands, and the available suppliers.

Delivered solution

We developed a Magento Commerce module that managed suppliers, materials, and prices organised by quantity band. The engine evaluated the parameters entered in the PWA, selected the best available supplier offer, applied the commercial margin, and calculated freight for the specified destination.

Operational value

The PWA could immediately present product and freight pricing for a specific configuration. The customer could then turn the quotation into an order without waiting for a separate manual quotation.

Admin-configurable Magento pipeline for Power BI

Engineering challenge

Power BI required regular exports from the Magento database, but business data such as orders was distributed across multiple technical tables. Administrators needed to choose what to export without understanding the internal schema.

Delivered solution

We developed an admin module that grouped tables by functional domain and generated exports transferred over FTP. Users could select data groups, change the daily cron schedule, or trigger an immediate export when required.

Operational value

The Power BI feed became configurable from the Magento back office, reducing dependence on database knowledge for recurring or urgent reporting exports.

Custom module for shipping and returns orchestration

Engineering challenge

The Magento order lifecycle had to connect with the external provider responsible for shipping and return operations while keeping every activity associated with the correct order.

Delivered solution

We developed the integration between Magento orders and the workflows required by the logistics system, translating the platform’s relevant data and states into the provider’s operational process.

Operational value

The provider could manage shipping and returns as part of the sales workflow while Magento retained the connection to the affected orders.

Event-driven sales and refund reporting

Engineering challenge

Sales and refunds completed in Magento had to be transmitted to the external platform responsible for reporting them to government systems.

Delivered solution

We developed a module that connected the relevant Magento order and refund events to the data flow required by the external fiscal platform.

Operational value

Relevant transactions entered the reporting process directly from the Magento order lifecycle without creating a separate operational flow for fiscal transmission.

Custom eBay module with dynamic field mapping

Engineering challenge

Magento and eBay operated as separate channels, with independently identified products and different attribute models. Catalogue and inventory had to stay aligned, including custom Magento fields.

Delivered solution

We developed a module with a dynamic mapper connecting standard and custom Magento attributes to eBay fields. An additional relationship layer associated product identities across both channels and brought synchronisation into Magento’s central operational flow.

Operational value

Magento became the primary operational source while product mappings and inventory could be kept consistent with the eBay channel.
